The ECO4 scheme, a government initiative in Great Britain, provides financial aid to households seeking energy-efficient upgrades. Homeowners with a low EPC rating can apply for a comprehensive package of energy-saving measures and heating enhancements. Importantly, the scheme extends beyond boiler upgrades or replacements.
What is the ECO4 Scheme?
Launched in August 2022, ECO4 represents the fourth phase of the Government’s Energy Company Obligation, extending its impactful initiatives until March 31, 2026. This program is dedicated to providing invaluable support to vulnerable households by offering cost-free energy-saving measures. The overarching goal of ECO4 is to significantly enhance the efficiency and heating systems of these homes, ensuring a more sustainable and comfortable living environment for those in need.
Who's eligible for ECO4?
If you are a current SW3 customer, you must meet specific eligibility criteria for ECO4. Our installers will conduct a DWP check prior to installation, and if you solely receive Child Benefits, you will be required to furnish your Child Benefit Award Notice, a signed self-declaration, and supporting evidence to establish eligibility. A website outlining Child Benefit eligibility is provided, with Total Household Income thresholds applicable and available for reference.
To qualify for ECO4, your property should have an EPC rating of E or below. Additionally, you must be in receipt of one of the following:
- Income-based Job Seekers Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Income Support
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Working Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
- Universal Credit
- Housing Benefit
- Pension Credit Savings Credit
It's crucial to note that the benefits listed below do not contribute to eligibility for the ECO4 scheme:
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Severe Disability Allowance
- Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
- War Pensions Mobility Supplement
- Constant Attendance Allowance
- Armed Forces Independence Payment

The ECO scheme has been designed by the government to improve the most energy-inefficient properties. The scheme requires that the fabric of a property (walls, floors and roofs) are considered before replacing a heating system.
If all insulation work has been done, it may be possible to upgrade your heating system, but further scheme restrictions may apply.
An upgrade would typically be;
- Upgrading from electric room heaters to an efficient air source heat pump
- Upgrading from inefficient electric storage heaters to an efficient air source heat pump
- Upgrading from a non-condensing gas boiler to an efficient A-rated combi boiler
In order to be eligible for the ECO scheme, your property must meet the minimum EPC band improvement. The measures identified by the installer will meet this requirement and must be installed to be eligible for the scheme.

The ECO scheme is not a grant scheme. Payments are made directly to the installer based on the work completed in your home. EDF only uses installers that meet the accreditation requirements set by the government.
This means that all the work carried out will be to a high standard, making sure the improvements help you make your home more efficient for the long term.
